At the “Bridging Polarities” Inner Development Goals Summit in Stockholm last month, I attended the AI Track on Day 2. All of the sessions were amazing and I will follow-up with more Cliff’sNOTES – and, I started with this one because – I’ll let the pictures below answer why! And, shout out to presenter Joakim Eriksson, Associate Partner, Potential Project, for the excellent presentation.
The most awesome quote from this book, IMHO:
“The Age of AI Belongs to the Both/And Leader.”
A few of many awesome messages from the book/presentation:
AI doesn’t replace leaders — it reveals them
AI handles complexity so humans can handle humanity
AI is not a threat to human leadership – it’s a wake-up call
AI can become a force multiplier for consciousness, not a substitute for it
AI doesn’t mechanize leadership — it (potentially) makes leadership more human
The core message of the book is that AI, when used thoughtfully, frees leaders from the noise, clutter, and overload that prevent them from showing up with clarity, presence, empathy, and creativity. In doing so, AI becomes a catalyst for the very capacities that make leadership distinctly human.
Again, we have a powerful message that underneath the AI story is a predictable pattern that forms the predictable polarity dynamic and offers leaders possibilities to navigate, not choose between.
When noise is removed with the help of AI, leaders can:
- spend more time in meaningful conversations
- act with clarity instead of reactivity
- think more strategically
- build deeper trust
- coach instead of micromanage
Technology’s Power AND Humanity’s Contribution
This is the engine that drives the entire narrative.
It asks leaders to:
- Let the machines do what machines do best.
- Reclaim what only humans can do: connect, inspire, coach, imagine, and care.
When we leverage this polarity well, leadership becomes lighter, deeper, more conscious, and — ultimately — more human.
Technology’s Power (AI)
- Automates repetitive tasks
- Surfaces insights hidden in data
- Reduces cognitive load
- Expands analytic and predictive capacity
Humanity’s Contribution
- Meaning-making
- Ethical judgment
- Creativity and curiosity
- Relationship-building and empathy
- Vision, intuition, and values
Over-focusing on AI → cold leadership, loss of trust, over-reliance on metrics, shallow decision-making.
Over-focusing on “human-only” leadership → overwhelm, outdated methods, avoidable bias, burnout, and missed opportunities.
The book’s claim: Leveraging both — not choosing one — transforms leadership capacity.
Quick Aside –
Additional Polarity Tensions Cited that Form a *Multarity™
In Chapter 42 of “And: How to leverage polarity, paradox, and dilemma, Volume 2, Applications.”) I describe *Multarity™”
*Interdependencies of more than two poles,
which synergistically contribute to a greater purpose
that is more than the sum of the parts.
Efficiency AND Presence
AI enables leaders to reclaim time, attention, and energy — not to do more, but to lead better.
Efficiency (AI)
- Fewer manual tasks
- Faster feedback loops
- More accurate information
- Scalable operational clarity
Presence (Human Leadership)
- Listening deeply
- Being available to your team
- Coaching and developing people
- Holding high-quality conversations
When these are used together, leaders create cultures of connection, performance, and psychological safety.
Data-Informed Judgment AND Values-Based Decision-Making
AI brings analysis; leaders bring wisdom.
- AI improves decision quality through pattern detection
- Humans determine what matters, why it matters, and how decisions affect people
The book emphasizes that ethical leadership is never outsourced.
What we offer at Polarity Partnerships, are tools like the Polarity MapÒ and 5-Step Process (Seeing, Mapping, Assessing, Learning, and Leveraging) to support leaders, teams, and organizations. And, what organizations measure and track tend to get accomplished — and for that using our customized Polarity Assessment platform may be helpful to integrate into strategy and operations.
If your leaders, teams, and organization needs support that leverages these polarities — as a Multarity – let’s partner!
